Whitby is the home of Easter – kind of!

Did you know that the way we calculate the date of Easter was actually decided in Whitby? In 664, there was a big divide in faith in England, with Celtic and Roman Christian religions in conflict. So, leaders gathered together in Whitby Abbey to decide once and for all how to calculate the date of Easter. This event was called the Synod of Whitby. You can learn more about it here.

Where better to spend some of the Easter break than in Whitby? There’s lots to see and do in our beautiful coastal town, so hop on over this holiday weekend!
